The Roanoke Valley has a special bonus with the educational opportunities that exist. There are five public school systems, 4 higher learning institutions, 12 private and parochial schools plus a new downtown learning center, Roanoke Higher Education Center, that houses college and graduate-level courses offered by 13 state and private institutions.
Within the Roanoke County school system, each high school has a school within a school as magnet programs are offered at each of the five high schools (Glenvar, Cave Springs, William Byrd, Northside, and the newest in 2001, Hidden Valley). Magnet programs are also offered throughout the Roanoke City school system.
The State of Virginia has a special program entitled SOL (Standards of Learning). All public schools are within the SOL program and many have already become fully accredited with the SOL standards. The Salem City School system is one of the first school systems in Virginia to have all of their schools fully accredited.
Located in Salem is the highly rated Roanoke College. Roanoke College is a four-year liberals arts institution that participates in NCAA Division III sports activities. Hollins University, located in Roanoke, is an all-female 4-year institution with graduate studies; it is renown.
The public and business communities are well served by Virginia Western Community College where students can take special courses or work on their degrees. With the newly opened Roanoke Higher Education Center in downtown Roanoke, 13 public and private colleges and universities offer day and night courses in many curriculums.
